Linux route add using ‘route’ command

1.     Add/Check IP Address
# ifconfig eth0:1
eth0:1    Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:0C:29:CA:67:96
          inet addr:192.168.101.114  Bcast:192.168.101.255  Mask:255.255.254.0
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          Interrupt:67 Base address:0x2000

2.       Check default gateway
# netstat -nr
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags   MSS Window  irtt Iface
192.168.100.0   0.0.0.0         255.255.254.0   U         0 0          0 eth0
169.254.0.0     0.0.0.0         255.255.0.0     U         0 0          0 eth0
10.0.0.0        0.0.0.0         255.0.0.0       U         0 0          0 eth0
0.0.0.0         10.0.0.1        0.0.0.0         UG        0 0          0 eth0

3.       Execute route command
# route add default gw 192.168.100.1 eth0:1

4.       Check new gateway
# netstat -nr
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags   MSS Window  irtt Iface
192.168.100.0   0.0.0.0         255.255.254.0   U         0 0          0 eth0
